NOVEMBER | COMMON IVY BERRY

As we find ourselves in the transitory period between Autumn and Winter we continue to share our monthly plant series, where we focus on the plants which feature in our most recent collection LOST TOUCH.

Each month or look includes a rendition of a plant that is in its full flush of growth during that month.

For November it’s Ivy Berries.

Inspired by the Hedera Helix variety or more widely known as our Common Ivy. This clinging climber can grow up to 20–30 meters high and can grow across most surfaces such as tree trunks, walls, urban wastelands and effectively builds habitats while doing so. Its lush evergreen foliage supports many birds, insects and small mammals by providing food, shelter and nest sites all year round.

The clinging nature of how the plant grows has made it a symbol of fidelity, love and friendship and there was once a tradition of giving Ivy to newlyweds.

Hedera Helix is a highly efficient air purifier due to its high stomatal density in its leaves which provide fast gas exchange, removing pollutant VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) from the air. When grown on buildings it also acts as a thermal blanket providing excellent heat regulation. Buildings are kept warmer in the winter and significantly cooler in the summer.

Ivy flowers from late Summertime and once fully fertilised they flourish into umbels of bulbus berries by Winter. Initially producing small, green ovoids which then speedily swell into plump dark berries with a high-calorie content. Although toxic to humans, these provide much needed sustenance to wildlife in the depths of the Winter hungry gap.

We have translated this plump fleshy globular bounty into our Ivy berry cuff, stuffing each silk sphere with the tiniest of our silk offcuts to create firm, luscious forms in a silk with a reflective sheen.
