SEPTEMBER | DOG ROSE HIPS

We continue with our monthly plant series, where we share a focus on the plants which feature in our most recent collection LOST TOUCH.

Each month or look includes a rendition of a plant that is in its full flush of growth during that month.

For September we share Rose Hips from the wild Dog Rose.

Our rose hips have been inspired by the ‘Dog Rose' variety, a wild rose native to Britain and scientifically known as ‘Rosa Canina.’

Once a Rose’s flowers have been fertilised they produce small fruits, Rose Hips, in late Summer or early Autumn time. When a Rose flower is spared from deadheading, the many small seeds begin to grow and swell, creating hips or haws. These firm, blushing fruits produce a fleshy layer, the pericarp, which is packed full of vitamin C. Causing these beauties to pertain high medicinal and culinary value.

This deciduous shrub spurts strong prickly stems whilst bearing flowers with fragrant and fragile pinky petals with prominent yellow stamens. These wide opening petals provide easy access to pollen and nectar for pollinators.

The hips of the Dog Rose, appear as red rubies; a scattering of jewels across British landscapes, offering nutrition for insects and birds across the seasons.

Archaeological finds have confirmed that, along with blackberries, rose hips were eaten as early as 2,000 BC.

We have rendered this bead like charm across the body with our Rose Hip Harness, constructing firm, ovoid, droplets of silk to wrap across limbs. Each hip is hand stuffed with our smallest silk scraps.
